Saturday 28 February 2026 ~ Amateur Archives, Education, and Collective Memory

Alberta Romano’s research focuses on archives that preserve amateur materials, considering them privileged spaces for observing social, historical, and cultural dynamics not mediated by official narratives. Central to the project are the bonds of kinship and affinity that influence image preservation, transmission, and sometimes removal practices. The public activation of these intimate and sensitive materials offers an opportunity to reflect on ethical and educational issues.

It is within this context that she collaborated with Alessandra Ferrini, whose research, based on lens-based media, focuses on memory, historiographical and archival practices, and postcolonial theory. By experimenting with the expansion and hybridization of documentary film, she questions the enduring legacies of colonialism and fascism, with a particular interest in the network of past and present relations among Italy, the Mediterranean region, and the African continent.

The talk will be an opportunity to delve deeper into the artist’s research, as well as to present the results of the workshop conceived by Alessandra Ferrini in collaboration with the students of class 5A at the Marini–Gioia–Comite Scientific High School in Amalfi.
